History!!!
John Hopkins University!
In the late 1800s, people started to feel that being skinny was the way to go, so why not start dieting in a way that would complement your bodily desires? But when people realized that sweet foods only lead to more fat, people started wanting substitutes for fattening sugar they were consuming.
Soon enough, in 1878, scientists Constantine Fahlberg and Ira Ramsen at John Hopkins University discovered Saccharin, the God given miracle of a sweetener substitute! They originally took tulane, and then sulfonated it through chlorofluosulfonic acid, then ammonia is seperates and converts the ortho from the chlorosulfonic acid into sulfonamide, and then when oxygenated, they got Saccharin! That sounds simple enough.
After Fahlberg took all the credit for the discovery and completely ripping Ramsen, people from far and near started using saccharin instead of glucose. Even President Teddy Roosevelt said "Anybody who says saccharin is injurious to health is an idiot". Saccharin wasn't just for dieters and plump presidents though. It was also a great substitute for people with diabetes. Saccharin is considered by many as a good, healthy additive while also having that sweet taste, yet studies in the early 70's suggest it might very well cause bladder cancer.
